USAWR finished the 2018 International Wheelchair Rugby Canada Cup in the top spot after their 56-53 victory over Japan in Sunday’s gold medal final. The U.S.’s 6-0 record for the tournament included wins over Australia and Japan who came into the event ranked number one and three in the world respectively.
“The Canada Cup has always been a great tournament for preparing for either the Paralympics or World Championships, ” said Head Coach James Gumbert. “This weeks’ work will add to the growth we have been working and building on over the past 18 months. We have a lot to be proud of and a lot of work to do but it’s a great performance by the team.”
Next up for the American team is July’s training camp at the Lakeshore Foundation U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site with the GIO World Championships close on its’ heels, August 5-10 in Sydney. The 2018 World Championship offers automatic qualification to the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo for the country that comes away with the top spot.
