USAWR Takes Silver at Four Nations Invitational

Jen Allred on May 25, 2019

May 25, 2019 USA Wheelchair Rugby captured the silver medal in the inaugural Lakeshore Foundation 2019 Four Nations Invitational Wheelchair Rugby Tournament.  Championship Saturday began with a bronze medal matchup between defending world gold and silver medalists Japan and Australia. It was a back-and-forth match the entire way with the Japanese duo of Yukinobu Ike and Shinichi Shimakawa going goal for goal against Australians Ryley Batt and Chris Bond. With just seconds remaining, Japan got in the last goal winning 54-53 in dramatic fashion. The gold medal matchup between Great Britain and USA looked as though it may not be as intense with the U.S. leading by three goals midway through the third period. But after a few costly turnovers, momentum shifted to Great Britain who took the lead with four minutes to go in the match. USA ran out of time to make a comeback and Great Britain won 49-47. Next up for the Americans is the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru August 23-September 1st. At stake in those Games is a bid to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games for the top finisher.
